While providing massive data services, data centers must ensure the safety and continuity of electricity consumption, and electrochemical energy storage can improve power quality, save electricity costs through peaking and valley filling, frequency control and as a backup power supply, so the combination of the two has a basis. Energy storage systems have different application scenarios according to different data center energy usage. The main application scenarios of the energy storage system in the data center are as follows:

(1) As a backup power supply for the data center

Traditionally, data centers need to use a large number of lead batteries as backup power, the service life of these batteries is usually about 5 years, in order to ensure the safety of backup power, a batch of batteries need to be replaced every 5 years. And because of the high reliability of the conventional data center mains power, rarely discharge, the battery has been in a floating state, the state of the battery is unknowable, and the performance of the battery needs to be checked through regular fake load tests. Energy storage data center, the battery will discharge every day, the voltage after discharge is clear, it is easy to judge the battery is good or bad, help to remove the bad battery in time, but also save the cost of false load test every year.

(2) Data center renewable energy with energy storage system

At present, data centers are limited by energy consumption requirements and carbon emission quotas, and development is hindered, and the use of renewable energy to generate electricity has become a major trend in the construction of green data centers. However, in view of the electricity characteristics of data centers, data centers can not only rely on renewable energy such as solar power or wind power generation for self-use, on the one hand, its cost is higher; On the other hand, renewable energy generation such as photovoltaic power generation or wind power generation has the characteristics of discontinuity, and there is also a phenomenon such as abandoning light and wind, and the stability is poor. Therefore, if renewable energy is to replace traditional energy to achieve large-scale application, it must ensure the safety and reliability of its power supply.

The application of energy storage system in renewable energy power generation system can solve the above problem of power supply imbalance, and the combination of renewable energy power generation system and energy storage system can play a role in load regulation, energy storage, new energy access, and improve power quality. In popular terms, the energy storage system is likened to a reservoir, which first stores the electricity generated by the photovoltaic system or the wind system, and then releases it at the peak of electricity consumption, which can ensure the stability of the power supply of the renewable energy power generation system and reduce the waste of electricity.

(3) The data center uses the "peak cutting and valley filling" function of the energy storage system to reduce electricity costs

"Peak cutting and valley filling", the use of peak-valley electricity price difference to obtain income, is the current energy storage system application of the most common business model, but also the most profitable business model.

The so-called "peak cutting and valley filling", that is, the use of the national peak-valley electricity price policy, through the charge and discharge process of energy storage batteries to adjust the user's electricity curve, charge energy storage when the price is at a trough, and release the stored electricity when the price is at a peak, so as to make use of the peak-valley electricity price difference to earn the difference. The park or building with energy storage facilities is based on the peak-valley electricity price mechanism, and the heating and cooling system and energy storage facilities are coordinated to achieve intelligent electricity consumption and save electricity costs.

The data center adopts the energy storage mode, compared with the traditional mode, on the one hand, it can ensure the stability and continuity of the power supply, and will not be easily cut off. On the other hand, the "peak cutting and valley filling" mode can be used to obtain benefits, charging at night when the trough price, and releasing part of the electricity at the peak price during the day, which can effectively reduce the electricity cost of the data center.
